Sabai

Sabai grass is a natural fibre, mostly available in the hilly tribal areas of northern Odisha. The tribal people called it as “Bobei Dauda or Bobei Ghasa” locally. ‘Eulaliopsis Binata’, commonly known as Sabai grass is a perennial grass having needle like long leaves.
Sabai grass is collected from the forest mainly by the rural women. The needle like grass is cut while still green and sun dried. Thereafter they are seasoned in water before being woven into different attractive items of contemporary use. The dyes used for colouring the rope are natural dyes. The artistic hands of artisans have given a new recognition to Sabai Grass handicraft.
