Terracotta

Terracotta is one of the earliest and most basic crafts found in various centers in Odisha mostly in Sambalpur. Terracotta is a type of pottery that is made from burnt clay. It is also called ‘Mruttika’ in Odia. Terracotta art in Odisha goes back to 4th century BC and the tribal artisans create unique designs using special clay.

The clay lump is put on the potter wheel then crafted into objects by the artisans. Then sundried and fired in the kiln for hardening. Then individual parts are joined and coloured.

Terracotta items mostly include Diyas (small lamps), lanterns, earrings, necklaces, masks, vases, utilities like coffee cups, glasses, chulhas or clay cookstoves, incense stick stands, showpieces of just about anything (human figures, animals, plants, Lords’ statues, monuments) and imaginary items.
